It's one of the best Christmas presents a military family can get, their loved ones returning home just in time for the holidays.
On Saturday more than 100 National Guard troops returned home to Smyrna. The troops are members of the 212th Engineer Company. The group was in charge of constructing buildings and refurbishing offices.
News 2 spoke with Staff Sergeant Allen Carpenter who said most of his family didn't know he'd be home in time for Christmas, he wanted to surprise them.
Sgt. Carpenter got emotional talking about returning home from a nearly eleven month long deployment in the Middle East.
“It will be great for my daughter and my wife, a lot of the family doesn't know I'm even here yet so they have no clue. So I'll just show up today and they'll see me,” said Sgt. Carpenter.
Carpenter and his fellow soldiers were serving in Kuwait as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
