The Metro Council cleared a big hurdle in the effort to build a new Sounds ballpark in north Nashville during a meeting Tuesday night.

In a second reading, the council approved the proposal to finance and acquire land to build a ballpark at Sulphur Dell, located on Jackson Street, east of the Bicentennial Mall between Fourth and Fifth avenues.

“Tonight's vote moves the project one step closer to reality,” Nashville Mayor Karl Dean said.

During Tuesday night's meeting more than a dozen residents and business owners spoke passionately in support of the new stadium, which would also include a parking garage and a residential area.

“Nashville is a world class city,” said Sounds General Manager Brad Tammen. “And it deserves a world class ballpark.”

A specially called meeting for next Tuesday could mean the final vote of approval for the Sounds ballpark.
