A couple lost five pets and a firefighter was injured in a fire that broke out inside a south Nashville home Tuesday night.

Two dogs and three cats died in the blaze in the 5000 block of Marc Drive, not far from Edmondson Pike.

The couple reported the fire began in the garage then spread to the rest of the home.  They were able to escape uninjured.

Officials told News 2 one firefighter was taken to Southern Hills Hospital for treatment.  His condition was not immediately released.

Authorities plan to revisit the scene Wednesday morning to further investigate the cause.

The home is considered a total loss.

No further details have been released.
