Just ahead of Thanksgiving, hundreds of turkeys are being fried up to those in need at the Nashville Rescue Mission.

The tradition, started by country singer Tracy Lawrence, has been feeding the homeless with fried turkey for the holidays since 2006. The organization is also serving traditional Thanksgiving Day foods.

“I really look forward to participating in it and being involved every year,” Lawrence said.

Several volunteers are on hand to help out including Tennessee Titans cheerleaders, Bluegrass band The Roys, along soldiers with the Army National Guard.

“This is just an extra touch. We serve meals everyday, but today and the next two days over Thanksgiving break, to really send a message that you're special, you're giving our time and we're giving turkeys, and we're having this festive approach to let you know we care about you here in downtown Nashville,” Glenn Cranfield with the Nashville Mission said.

This year, the goal of the annual turkey fry is to fry up more than 500 turkeys.

Anyone looking to donate to the cause can visit the Nashville Rescue Mission's Web site to download the Thanksgiving Wish List. Donations can be dropped off Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Mission's Donation Center at 639 Lafayette Street in Nashville.
