A man who allegedly assaulted his elderly father and two children inside a Rutherford County home last week has died.
Police say Brian Gum, 45, injured his 72-year-old father, a 13-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl last Thursday night during an incident at the family's home on One Mile Lane in Smyrna.
The family was hospitalized immediately following the incident. Gum died Sunday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.
Police have yet to say what led to the violent attack, but did say the teenage boy was able to defend himself and his family members from Gum.
“It appears the boy stopped the attack and potentially saved the lives of his grandfather and sister,” Sheriff Robert Arnold previously said.
The 11-year-old girl remains hospitalized at Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt. Her brother and grandfather were treated and released.
The investigation is ongoing.
