A Connecticut couple celebrated their 81st wedding anniversary Monday, making them the longest married husband and wife in the United States.
John and Ann Betar exchanged vows on November 25, 1932. The couple has five children, 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
“We are very fortunate. It can be repeated and repeated,” Ann, 98, told ABC News, adding, “It is unconditional love and understanding. We have had that. We consider it a blessing.”
Ann was arranged to marry a man 20 years older than her when she decided to break tradition and elope with John. She was just 17 years old.
Now, 81 years later, Ann said she knows she made the right decision, adding the secret to a long, happy marriage is forgiveness and not holding a grudge.
The pair plans to celebrate the milestone anniversary with their family on Thanksgiving Day.
