Metro police are making an effort to inform Nashville citizens on how to park smart.
On Saturday, detectives went through shopping center parking lots handing out Park Smart fliers.
Half of all car thefts are done with the use of a key.
With the holiday season approaching, police wanted to give drivers tips on how to keep their cars from being stolen.
“Just make them aware that while you're out shopping for the holiday season, thieves are out here in the parking lot, you know, shopping for you, basically waiting to steal stuff from you,” said Sgt. Billy Smith with Metro's Auto Theft Unit.
When colder weather arrives, people might start their cars to warm them up before returning indoors.
Police said if your car is running and you leave it unattended, you are liable if a thief steals your car and crashes.
