A woman was killed in a six-vehicle accident on Interstate 24, closing a portion of the roadway for several hours Friday.

The crash was reported just before 3 p.m. along I-24 west at mile marker 59, near Bell Road in Antioch.

According to a news release, Ana Maria Hernandez, of south Nashville was killed following the six-vehicle collision.

Hernandez, believed to be in her mid-30s, was sitting in the rear passenger seat of a 2003 Toyota Corolla at the time of the incident.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the Corolla was traveling west on I-24 when it encountered a slow-down in traffic. Before coming to a stop, the Corolla rear-ended another vehicle, and was then hit from behind by an SUV.

The impact caused the Corolla to spin into another lane of traffic before it was then struck by a pickup truck, and then rear-ended by a Freightliner truck.

Hernandez died at the scene.

The driver of the Corolla, Adelina Espinoza, 45, and Jaqualine Mansilla, 30, were transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Espinoza received non-critical injuries. Mansilla, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, is in critical, but stable condition.

No other injuries were reported.

The roadway was closed for several hours and the scene was completely cleared just before 9:30 p.m. with traffic moving in all lanes.

Initial reports indicate improper following and speeds too fast for road conditions were contributing factors in the crash.

No evidence indicated drugs or alcohol were involved.
