A cab driver was charged with aggravated assault after police witnessed a woman hanging outside of his taxi on Saturday.

The officer reported he was driving outbound on West End Avenue when he saw traffic was stopped and heard people yelling.

After making his way through the traffic, the officer saw a female hanging outside of a white Allied Cab and a man chasing after it.

The driver, identified as 43-year-old Mulate Asres, reportedly didn't stop until police initiated their sirens despite the patrol car's lights being on.

After speaking with everyone involved, police learned there was a disagreement as to how much money Asres was owed and how much change the victim should have received.

Asres was arrested and charged with aggravated assault for utilizing his vehicle as a deadly weapon and causing injury to the victim.

Billy Fields, Director of the Transportation Licensing Commission, said Asres is currently not driving a cab in Nashville.

“He had no issues like this in his background. Like any cab driver, as much as they drive, he had some driving issues like tickets, but in terms of violence I can't find anything that would lead me to believe he was a violent person,” said Fields.

The victim, who is from out-of-state, suffered minor scratches to both her arms as a result of being dragged.

The cab's outside mirror was also broken due to the victim attempting to keep her feet off the ground while she was hanging from the vehicle.

Asres did not want to comment on the incident.

Nashville's News 2 also tried to contact Allied Cab but our phone calls were not returned.
