The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation arrested the mayor of Greenbrier Monday afternoon after he was indicted for stealing from the local Toys for Tots charity he founded.

Billy Eugene Wilson, 56, was indicted Friday on one count of official misconduct and one count of theft over $60,000 for taking money from the charity.

According to the TBI, between November 1, 2005 and October 31, 2013, Wilson took approximately $60,000 to pay his personal expenses.

Wilson perpetrated the theft through his position as mayor, volunteer fire chief and founder of Greenbrier Toys for Tots.

The investigation into allegations that Wilson also misused city funds is ongoing.

Wilson was arrested at Greenbrier City Hall and booked into the Robertson County jail on $5,000 bond.  He has since been released.

“We have a great system set up, we have a great city recorder, police chief everything is great. Like I said, we have a contingency plan we just put that into effect and Mayor Wilson is still the mayor of the city. Until that point when he comes back we're just operating under this plan until he gets back,” Greenbrier Superintendent Tommy Maitland said.

Greenbrier is located about 25 miles north of Nashville.

Non-profit Greenridge Civitans has taken over the Toys for Tots program this year.
