Expansion plans for the Cool Springs Galleria received the green light at Thursday night's Franklin planning commission meeting.
The 22-year-old mall, which is credited with being a major catalyst for growth in the area, will soon undergo a facelift and more square footage.
By a vote of 8-0, the planning commission gave final approval to the three phase plan which calls for a new south entrance near Sears. In a second phase stand alone stores, including two near the Macy's entrance, will be added.
Franklin Planning Commissioner Mike Hathaway told News 2 he believes the nearly 74,000 square foot expansion project will be beneficial to the area.
“Well, I think it's a great opportunity for the city economically to improve, to become better and to offer more services to the community and to the citizens,” he said. “We have a lot of opportunities. A lot of folks want to come to this area and I think this gives them an opportunity to do that.”
The first phase of the project is expected to begin in early 2014.
