A Tennessee police officer lost his job after he fired shots and pepper spray at a squirrel inside an area retailer earlier this month.

According to WJHL, Mountain City police officer Jody Putnam was called to a Johnson County Dollar Store in an effort to help get a squirrel out of the store.

Upon his arrival, Putnam is said to have fired his gun inside the store before spraying pepper spray at the wild animal.

Authorities said whenever an officer shoots his gun for any reason it must report it to a supervisor and provide a written statement.

WJHL reported Putnam refused to comply with the policy. He was fired on October 2.

“Through a violation of the police department policy Officer Jody Putnam's employment, as a Mountain City Police Officer, was terminated by the Board of Mayor and Alderman,” Mountain City Mayor Lawrence Keeble told the TV station.

Putnam worked as a Mountain City police officer for five years.
