An 82-year-old Murfreesboro man remains hospitalized for West Nile after being diagnosed with the virus in mid-September.

According to the Daily News Journal, Marion Rogers remains in intensive care at Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital.

Prior to contracting the illness, Rogers was described as “physically active” and had a “clean bill of health.”

Family members told the newspaper Rogers is bedridden and unable to speak. He occasionally is unable to breathe without the help of a ventilator.

“It makes me think twice about mosquito bites,” son Guy Rogers told the newspaper. “Every day I tell [my dad], ‘you're not going to believe this, but a mosquito caused this whole issue.'”

The West Nile virus is transmitted from mosquitoes to humans.
