Governor Bill Haslam's office said Tuesday the federal government shutdown could impact the issuance of handgun carry permits in Tennessee.

The shutdown could slow federal background checks, and gun permits could take longer to issue.

Officials said the impact would only be felt of the shutdown lasts more than 10 days.

The Tennessee Firearms Association issued a statement regarding the possible delay, which reads, in part, “Although the statutory language is set forth below, it is important to note that the state of Tennessee is required to issue the permit within 90 days of the date of application even if the FBI never responds.”

A spokesperson with the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security told News 2 there has been no delay in the issuance of handgun carry permits so far, and none is expected.

The governor's office also says the department that will be impacted most by the government shutdown is Human Services.

Certain programs can only sustain themselves for a limited time without federal funding.
