An upperclassman at Spring Hill High School is making a name for herself as the school's newest member of the football team.

Alexa Goodman, who previously played soccer, is adding kicker for the Raiders football team as part of her accomplishments.

“Football is something most girls don't do,” Goodman said. “I thought it would be great to be different.”

“Right now, I'm kicking a 25 yard. Not on average, but that's the farthest I've kicked so far. So my goal is that I eventually want to reach up to is a 30 [yard],” she added.

In the classroom, Goodman said she likes to have a little fun with her classmates who take notice of her new role on the team.

“They're like, 'Hey, don't you play football?' And I'm like, 'Yeah, I do.' They're like, 'What position?' and I'm like, 'Lineman,' joking around. 'No, I play kicker.' They're like, 'That's so cool!'

Despite being the only girl on the team, Head coach Tom Turchetta said she is just another team player.

“She does everything that the guys do and I think they appreciate that,” Coach Tom Turchetta said. “They appreciate the fact that she's blending in with them and not having to do something different or special to be part of the team.”

Turchetta, who is also new to the team, added he didn't expect such a reaction by having Goodman on the team. He just wanted her out on the field playing.

“Really, you look at it like giving a youngster an opportunity to make your football team and help our team to be better,” he said.

Goodman added, “If it wasn't for them and Coach T., I wouldn't be out here today.”

The Spring Hill Raiders are currently 1-1. The team will take on the Cascade Champions out of Wartrace Friday night at 7 p.m.
