One person was killed after a tanker truck collided with a pickup truck Tuesday morning in Maury County.

The accident happened around 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 43 and State Route 166 in Mt. Pleasant.

Mt. Pleasant police said the driver of the pickup truck was traveling east on State Route 166, failed to stop at the intersection and pulled into the path of the tanker truck.

The driver died on the scene.

“People don't pay attention.  You [have to] stop.  It's a major intersection. People live here and why they get complacent, I don't know,” Mt. Pleasant Police Sergeant Tommy Goetz said.

In 2011, two teens were killed at the same intersection when their vehicle collided with a big rig.

“This is the worst intersection I've seen around here. [It] seems like people can't judge the speed of the traffic coming and just pull out in front of them.  I just don't understand it,” resident Tom Titus said.

Due to the number of crashes at the intersection, authorities have added signage and pavement markings in an effort to get motorists to pay closer attention.

“It boils down to you just [have to] stop.  You [have to] stop.  You cannot beat oncoming traffic,” Goetz said.

The victim's identity in Tuesday's accident was not immediately released.

The driver of the tanker truck was uninjured.
