Families and friends partnered with Shoney's Saturday to benefit the Metro Police Department at LP Field by getting active.
Shoney's 2013 5K Family Fun Run & Walk is held annually through Shoney's CEO David Davoudpour.
“There are two noble jobs in America, what we do in the world for that matter, teaching (a teacher) and policing. With that, you know teaching can not be safe without policing so they go hand and hand together and further more what we do from this fundraising. It's not just about me writing a check for them also it's about getting community involved,” explained Davoudpour.
Davoudpour matched all of proceeds the event raises annually dollar for dollar and more than $108,000 has been raised for the Nashville Police Support Fund since the 5K Family Fun Run & Walk began in 2009.
Tennessee Titans first round draft pick Chance Warmack was the honorary starter for the race.
“I was scared, I was like is there any bullets in here, but there were blanks in there but that was a wonderful experience. I got a chance to talk to some police officers and talk to everybody and be a part of the community,” Warmack told Nashville's News 2.
Metro police chief Steve Anderson says the event is more than a run, it is about bonding with the community.
“It's a partnership and we say every day that we can not do our jobs without the support of the community and without that group support, without the support of the community we just wouldn't be able to do our job in the manner that we do it today,” Chief Anderson told News 2.
There was also a festival featuring activities for kids and a display of police equipment including a helicopter, SWAT armored vehicle, horses from the Mounted Unit, Bomb Squad robot, a patrol car, mobile crime lab and much more.
All proceeds from the event benefit the Nashville Police Support Fund, which is a component of The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, which helps officers defray the cost of higher education.
Saturday's 5th annual Shoney's 5K Family Fun Run & Walk generated $20,754 for the Nashville Police Support Fund.
