A Putnam County teacher has died from a head injury she sustained after falling at her home Tuesday morning.

According to a report in the Herald-Citizen, Susan Kirkpatrick was getting ready for school when she fell in her home's bathroom, striking her head on the tile floor.

The newspaper reported the 37-year-old Burks School teacher was able to call a neighbor for help, who in turned called for emergency responders.

“She was taken to the hospital and died in the emergency room, and the coroner called the police on the case due to the short time from the injury to her death,” Lt. Carl Sells told the newspaper, adding, “He called and told us that she had died quickly after being taken to the hospital.”

Authorities said Kirkpatrick's death was “a freak accident” and that there were no signs of criminal activity.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed.

Kirkpatrick, who lived in Cookeville, taught physical education at Burks School in Monterey.

She was engaged to be married next month and is survived by her fiancé Patrick Elmore and parents Neil and Janie Kirkpatrick.
