The company that has been known to blur the line between fashion and pornography is coming under fire for only making clothes for the “cool kids.”
Critics say the controversial retailer deliberately leaving out plus-size women.
The company does not sell women's wear in any size above large.
A number of people told Nashville's News 2 they call that discrimination.
“Personally I think it's kind of bogus only marketing to a certain kind of people,” said Kyle Shrum of Chattanooga. “But it is a free market system so I guess you can do whatever you want.”
“When I was in high school, that's what all the cool kids would wear,” said Hannah Whitney of Knoxville. “I would have loved to wear their clothes but they would never fit. So I always felt excluded from that group simply because I couldn't wear those clothes.”
Evan Catlett, a native Nashvillian who worked for the company's flagship store in New York, said that even the people chosen to work inside the store are hired based on looks.
“You are the face of the store,” he said. “About 99% of the models in the store are actually commerical models represented by agencies.”
Abercrombie & Fitch is not apologizing for marketing only to thin young people.
CEO Mike Jeffries has admitted that the company is exclusionary and only goes after certain shoppers.
