A Murfreesboro group is gathering signatures for the elimination of red light cameras in the town.

The group called Citizens Against Photo Enforcement, or CAPE, hopes to gather 1,000 signatures for its effort.

Murfreesboro police argue the cameras are making intersections across the city safer and plan to present a proposal to expand the effort at a council meeting Thursday.

The six intersections that are currently part of Project Safe Streets include:

South Church Street at Middle Tennessee Boulevard
Memorial Boulevard at North Boulevard
Rutherford Boulevard at mercury Boulevard
Old Fort Parkway at Thompson Lane
Broad Street at Church Street
Broad Street at Northfield Boulevard

Since the implementation of the red light camera program, officials have issued more than 75,000 citations.
