NORRIS, Tenn. (AP) – A house in Norris that was designed and built as a University of Tennessee project has won a prestigious environmental award.
The Knoxville News Sentinel reports the New Norris House was named by the American Institute of Architects and its Committee on the Environment as among the nation's top 10 examples of sustainable architecture and green design in 2013.
The New Norris House is a collaborative effort of UT's College of Architecture and Design, the College of Engineering, the Department of Environmental Studies and Clayton Homes. The 1,008 square-foot facility retains warmth and charm, but also includes cutting-edge energy-efficient technology.
Among other things, the house uses solar power and attempts to use all stormwater collected on the site.
The house is modeled after Norris cottages constructed in the 1930s.
