A Tennessee Department of Transportation employee is lucky to be alive after his vehicle was sideswiped by a semi-truck.

Kevin Battle had pulled over along Interstate 40 in Nashville around 2 a.m. Friday to check a storm drain when the crash occurred.

“All of a sudden this 18-wheeler came out of nowhere at a high rate of speed and hit me broadside on the driver's side,” said Battle.

Battle told Nashville's News 2 he'd only been back in his truck for less than a minute when the vehicle was struck. If he'd been standing outside, he believes he would have been killed.

“I think it was God. I think it was God watching over me I really do,” said Battle.

Battle's truck was hit a second time after it was pushed into the interstate by the semi-truck.

The semi-truck went off an embankment and came to a stop on Lewis Street after rolling through a guardrail.

The driver was reportedly ok.

Amazingly, Battle walked away without a scratch. He was transported to a nearby hospital as a precaution.

“I think my baby could have been killed. The way the truck looks it's a miracle,” said Deborah Washington, Battle's mother-in-law.

The crash happened during Work Zone Awareness Week. Battle wants to take the opportunity to remind drivers to move over when they see emergency or work vehicles on the side of the road.

“Just pay attention to flashing lights and work zones and slow down in work zones,” said Battle.

Battle has been with TDOT for nearly 20 years and says it's the first time he's been involved in an accident while on the job.
