Stylist Manuel Cuevas has been designing clothes for celebrities for years, now he is branching out with a new clothing line for the everyday American.
Cuevas, who is known simply as Manuel in Nashville and around the world, is known for his flamboyant handmade rhinestone designs that can easily cost thousands of dollars.
“I have seen through the last 30 years how we have lost really our manufacturing powers, our skills and craftsmanship. You can not find a tailor to work,” he told Nashville's News 2.
On Tuesday morning while busily designing clothes, Manuel shared his vision to bring back pride in the American fashion industry.
“I have been doing this since 1986,” he said. “[We need to] do it the right way, the way we used to do things. I am not saying lets go back 300 years, which is my age. I am not saying that. I am saying lets go back to where it really works for our economy for our welfare.”
The designer's new line, “New Vision” will have a more traditional Manuel flare. He added most importantly, all of the items will be completely made in America.
“To do that at a price that people can afford but what we want really is to avoid the foreign market; to kind of destroy it,” he said.
Manuel is currently using the Web site Indiegogo to raise $250,000 in capital.
“Then I can hire about 10 new people, especially some of my students that have been students from me and they walk away from here with a lot of expertise,” he told Nashville's News 2.
Manuel added he hopes by bringing production back to America others will choose to follow his lead.
“And where does that money stay? In our county. Who benefits? America people,” he said.
Manuel's new line will include shirts, pants, dresses, skirts, jackets, boots and accessories.
He is hosting a showcase and kick off party for his new line of clothing on Wednesday.
The event will be held 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Manuel American Designs located at 1922 Broadway.
