Murfreesboro police arrested a 20-year-old man accused of shooting a man multiple times when he and others confronted the victim in an effort to steal his gambling winnings.

According to a report in the Daily News Journal, John Leach III allegedly shot Shermane Robertson nine times over the weekend at a home in the 400 block of East Castle Street.

Robertson was reportedly shot in the back twice before he threw his winnings on the ground and attempted to flee.

The 28-year-old was then shot seven more times after he fell to the ground.

When police arrived to the scene, a woman was assisting Robertson with his wounds.

He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville where his condition remains unknown.

Leach was taken into police custody on Wednesday. He is charged with attempted first degree murder, criminal conspiracy, especially aggravated robbery and violating his parole.
