The family of a local World War II veteran is asking for help fulfilling his final request.

Harold Walters, 87, is very sick. He's suffering from pneumonia, congestive heart failure and COPD.

Walters was transported on Saturday from his home in Clay County to the Nashville Veteran Affairs Medical Center.

The former Navy seaman has 14 children and step-children, 32 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

Walters' youngest son, Shane, is incarcerated at the Turney Center Industrial Complex on a probation violation.

With his father possibly on his death bed, Shane is the only one that can't come home to say goodbye.

The Walters family is asking for help from state lawmakers and the Department of Corrections to allow Shane a supervised visit to see his dad before it's too late.

Even with his youngest son incarcerated, Harold Walters says it would mean the world to see him one last time.

“He's my son,” said Walters. “I've loved him for 30-something years. And I'll go to my grave loving him.”

Rep. Kelly Keisling (R-Byrdstown) has responded, saying he'd like to help arrange the visit.

Rep. Keisling told Nashville's News 2 that he “will work diligently to get this done for the family,” adding that the endeavor would require cooperation from a number of agencies, including the Department of Corrections and some area sheriff's departments.
