The chairman of the Spring Hill Planning Commission resigned Monday night and said he felt targeted by recent posts on Facebook.

A thread began on the “I Heart Spring Hill” Facebook page with a discussion revolving around potential developments in Spring Hill and progressed to the future planning commission.

Jonathan Schwartz said a racial divide emerged in the discussion and some elected officials chose to ignore it.

He cited some posts in the discussion, including one mentioning a burning cross in a front yard.

Schwartz was tagged in that post.

“[I was] reading about people talking about people talking about burning crosses in people's front yards, or making disparaging comments about blue collar workers, or fixing it by changing the planning commission and kicking me off of it,” Schwartz told the Board of Mayor and Aldermen.

Schwartz resigned before the Spring Hill mayor and board of aldermen Monday.

He stated his resignation would be effective immediately.

“When you cross racial boundaries, when you cross class boundaries, you have to ask yourself when is enough, enough?” Schwartz explained.

Spring Hill Mayor Michael Dinwiddie defended Schwartz by saying no one should be bullied into resigning.

Dinwiddie also asked him to stay on as planning commission chairman until the end of the mayoral term.

Schwartz said he will meet with the mayor to discuss the possibility.
