Heather Dowdy spends her Sunday afternoon at Smyrna's Lee Victory park, enjoying the sunshine and fresh air with some friends and their dogs, all of which are considered pitbulls.

If some state lawmakers get their way, they will also be labeled vicious, no matter how the animal behaves.

Dowdy, who is the editor of Nashville PAW magazine, told Nashville's News 2 that she believes breed specific legislation penalizes responsible pitbull owners.

“No matter what breed your dog is, whether it's a golden retriever or a pitbull, you are held responsible for keeping that dog and maintaining that dog in a way that's safe for the community,” said Dowdy.

With the label vicious, pitbull owners would be subject to additional safety requirements.

“Any dog can bite, any dog can be aggressive,” said Dowdy, “so [the law] shouldn't single out any specific breed.”

The Agriculture and Natural Resources subcommittee will take a closer look at the proposal Wednesday.
