It happened on an ordinary afternoon. Carole Simpson of Columbia was feeding her dogs when the camera crews showed up at her house, “ambushing” her with the great news.
She was named the winner of HGTV's 2013 Dream House Sweepstakes.
Her online entry from February 13 was chosen at random out of over 77 million entries for the grand prize, worth an estimated $2.2 million dollars.
In addition to the fully-furnished dream home, the prize package was a check for $500,000 and a GMC Acadia Denali.
“It's a low-country seaside type decor,” Simpson of the dream home, “It's beautiful inside. It's got a plunge pool and a totally decked out kitchen which I would love to bake in.”
The dream home is located in coastal Kiawah Island, South Carolina, just south of Charleston.
Simpson's daughter Nicole was also “ambushed” by the HGTV camera crews, and brought her along to surprise her mother.
“I'm very excited for her. It couldn't have happened to a better person,” said Nicole of the emotional moment, “I was really glad they made me a part of this so I could be there when all of this happened.”
The crews caught Simpson completely off-guard.
“I was flabbergasted,” she told Nashville's News 2, “I cried, I was scared, I was shaking really bad. I was so nervous to have all those cameras there and to realize what I had actually won.”
For now, Simpson and her daughter are letting the news sink in. They get their first look at the dream home next month.
“It never occurred to me that I would win,” said Simpson.
Simpson told Nashville's News 2 she plans to fly her son, his wife, and her 2 grandchildren in from Australia for a visit at the dream house.
