A Clarksville mother is in jail after allegedly abusing her nine-year-old son early Monday morning.

According to Clarksville police spokesman Jim Knoll, officers responded to a home in the 300 block of Market Street just around 12 a.m. after neighbors reported screaming coming from inside the apartment.

“They heard this through the wall, so this was very loud,” said Knoll. “The caller called again and said look, there's people gathering here, we're going in, which is highly unusual.”

When officers arrived , hey found Jessica Mires and her crying son inside.

“The woman who came to the door appeared to be intoxicated and not cooperative with officers,” Knoll told Nashville's News 2.

“We were able to make contact with the 9-year-old child. And through our investigation we found out that the child hadn't gotten everything ready for school and mom implemented punishment by slapping the child repeatedly on the back,” he continued.

“It is one of those things that we in law enforcement, in telling parents how to punish their child, but we are in the business of not letting parents abuse the children,” said Knoll.

The Department of Children's Services was contacted and interviewed the boy and his mother Tuesday morning.

Mires was booked into the Montgomery County Jail for child abuse and neglect charges.

She posted a $1,000 bond and was released.

EMS determined the boy had minor injuries and he was not transported to the hospital.

The child was left at the residence in the care of an adult male who told Nashville's News 2 that he was Mires' boyfriend.
