A Madison man pled guilty to a 2011 car accident that killed a 68-year-old woman and injured her husband.
Steven Allen, 32, was driving down Clarksville Pike on the morning of August 11, 2011 when he crossed the double line in the middle of the road.
He crashed into Velma Burkhart's car head-on, causing injuries that lead to her death later that evening.
Her husband, James Burkhart, 74, was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Authorities reported that at the time of the crash, a bottle of hydrocodone pills was found in Allen's pocket, his speech was slurred and his pupils were dilated.
Toxicology tests later confirmed that Allen had Soma and Xanax in his system when the incident occurred.
Allen pled guilty on Monday to vehicular homicide by intoxication and vehicular assault.
He was sentenced to jail for 10 years.
He also pled guilt to a felony drug charge in a separate case and received an additional 6 year sentence for that charge.
Allen will now serve both those sentences consecutively for a total of 16 years behind bars.
