First Baptist Church Nashville has agreed to sell a portion of its property to make room for a new Marriott hotel just across the street from the new Music City Center.
Church members voted to accept the offer of $11 million during a business meeting Wednesday night.
Local developer Tony Giarratana told Nashville's News 2 that the property is one of several sites being evaluated for the new hotel.
The property sits between 7th and 8th avenues facing Demonbreun and is currently a parking lot.
According to First Baptist pastor Frank Lewis, the property is approximately a half city block.
“For about the last 100 years or so, this congregation in this location has very carefully bought every parcel of property that became available to us,” said Lewis. “This is the first time we've reversed that to sell something instead of purchasing something.”
Lewis also said the church will use the $11 million to expand the church campus.
“This most recent offer is just, again, the timing seems to be right with the ministries outgrowing their facilities. It's a good opportunity to help them, we think it's a good move for the city so it just felt right this time,” he added.
The Music City Center is set to open in May.
