On Sunday, at least seven counties in southern Mississippi sustained damage after tornadoes ripped through the state.

Hit particularly hard was the city of Hattiesburg where electrical transformers were exploding.

Residents took shelter in local businesses. The mayor of Hattiesburg said warnings were issued and sirens were activated at least 20 to 30 minutes before the tornado hit, giving residents plenty of time to take cover.

At the University of Southern Mississippi, buildings that were over 100 years old were left in shambles. Luckily, with the students on a Mardi Gras holiday break, no injuries were reported.

A high school in the nearby community of Oak Grove suffered considerable damage.

In other parts of the city up to 63 injuries were reported.

No fatalities were reported.
