The former mayor of Clarksville, Johnny Piper, saved a choking man's life Wednesday night at an area pub.

According to a report in the Leaf Chronicle, Piper performed the Heimlich maneuver on a man, identified as real estate agent Wade Hadley around 7:30 p.m. at the Blackhorse Pub and Brewery.

Piper said when he noticed Hadley was unable to breathe and was turning blue, he told his wife and fellow diner to call 911 and quickly sprung into action performing the Heimlich.

“I went to the back of Wade and put my arms around him with my hands clasped in the center of his stomach and gave a Heimlich thrust and I heard immediately the response from him and the air gushing out from the maneuver,” Piper told the newspaper.

Piper was successful in the maneuver, which he had no formal training with, bringing Hadley back to consciousness.

“It was certainly a wonderful conclusion and just glad I was there, but it wasn't something that anyone else couldn't have done,” Piper said.

Hadley is recovering and said he does not recall the incident.
