Woman lies about cancer diagnosis to avoid jail time

A 48-year-old Knoxville woman was sentenced to one year in federal prison after it was determined she lied about a cancer diagnosis to avoid jail time for a bank fraud conviction.

Angela Elwood was sentenced on Thursday.

According to court documents, Elwood admitted that following being convicted of bank fraud in 2009 she submitted false medical documents that stated she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and needed immediate treatment.

The investigation involving Elwood was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
