A woman was hit by a car on Interstate 40 near Central Pike in Hermitage after crashing her own car early Wednesday morning.

The accident happened just before 3:15 a.m.  The woman told police she fell asleep behind the wheel of her Mitsubishi. She hit a retaining wall, causing her car to slide sideways into the center lane.

While the woman was checking on her car, a second vehicle struck the car, causing it to crash into her.

Metro police told Nashville's News 2 the woman suffered head injuries but is expected to survive.

The driver of the second car was not injured.

As of 4:15 a.m. only one lane of traffic was open.  The roadway was cleared by 5:45 a.m.
