A Nashville mother and son are on the road to recovery following a surgery that put one life in danger to save another.

Nineteen-year-old Noah Harrison donated a kidney to his mom, 43-year-old Erica Johnson, last week in time for Christmas.

Johnson suffered from kidney failure and had been on dialysis since 2010.  Her survival was depend on a transplant.

All three of Johnson's children were matches, but they decided the youngest son would be the best option.

“I was asking him, are you sure about this? I had made up my mind, I was going to say it's too much, just too much,” Johnson told Nashville's News 2.

Johnson was concerned about her son.

“Her asking me all the way up to the very end wasn't surprising. I kept telling her no, I'm good, I'll do it,” Harrison said.

Both mother and son were released from Vanderbilt Medical Center on Saturday and are doing well at home.

Johnson says she is thankful her son gave her the gift of life and plans to make the most of this second chance.

“You feel very honored and you feel obligated to pay it forward in some kind of way,” Johnson said.

The surgery ends Johnson's seven-month wait on the transplant list.

The family hopes their story will inspire others to consider organ donation.
