The News 2 viewing area can expect rain this afternoon, tonight, and early Wednesday as a vigorous low pressure system moves across the Mid-South. While a severe threat exits for areas south of the Volunteer State today and tonight, blizzard warnings are in effect for parts of northwest Tennessee, western Kentucky, Arkansas, Missouri, southern Illinois and southern Indiana tonight. Those areas will be on the cold, northwest side of the surface low pressure that tracks across Tennessee.

Developing northwest winds tomorrow will gust to 35 mph and drop temperatures from the 40s into the 30s by afternoon. Scattered snow showers will be possible, although not much more than a dusting is expected, and that may be limited to the higher terrain outside the city of Nashville. Areas by the Cumberland Plateau may see up to 1″ of slushy snow Wednesday afternoon through Wednesday night, although our forecast confidence is not very high due to the limited moisture on the backside of this system.

The medium-to-long range computer models indicate that this colder pattern will stick with us right through the New Year, so plan on temperatures at or below freezing for the next week or two.
