Families gathered for a somber Christmas event in Nashville on Thursday night to remember and honor loved ones who were murdered.

The annual “Season to Remember” ceremony was held at Centennial Park.

Attendee Brenda Smith told Nashville's News 2 the annual event helps ease the pain following the loss of her son who was murdered.

“Physically we can't hold them, but in our heart we hold onto them,” she said.

For Barbara Moore the event helps her not only honor her late son, but also helps her find happiness during a season that is particularly difficult.

“We just share stories and I lift them up anyway I can and they life me up anyway they can and we cry together and talk together and end up laughing,” she said.

During Thursday night's observance, which is organized by the city, Mayor Karl Dean said he knows about each homicide in Nashville.

“As a father and husband I want the same thing as each of you for the ones we love to be safe. As mayor I want more for Nashville to be one of the safest cities in this county,” he said.

“Season to Remember” was started 18 years ago by then mayor Phil Bredesen.
