Senior citizens are often overlooked or alone during the holidays but one company hopes to change that and is in need of help.

Home Instead Senior Care, a company offering home care to the elderly, is again working to make sure the elderly are not forgotten this holiday season through its “Be A Santa To A Senior” project.

The gifts from the project may be the only gift many seniors receive this Christmas.

“There are ornaments on the trees, that we have received names of over 2,000 seniors from case managers and social workers and some of the needs that some of the seniors are asking for are really just basic necessities,” Suzanne Saxon with Home Instead Senior Care told Nashville's News 2.

To pick up an ornament, visit any participating CVS store in Middle Tennessee.

Anyone can purchase a gift for the senior citizen listed on the ornament and then return the unwrapped gift to the same CVS store before December 14.

The gift will be distributed to the seniors before Christmas.

So far, about 1,000 ornaments have been taken from the CVS stores but there are still many more.

“[Senior citizens] really are left out and especially this time of year,” Saxon continued.  “We wanted to reach out and we wanted to make sure that we could get to as many as we could to let them know that they are not forgotten.”

Many of the seniors are asking for basic necessities like shampoo, gloves and blankets.

“There's just not enough money, sometimes just to make ends meet and a lot of seniors are actually choosing between their medications and purchases that they need, just household purchases,” Saxon said.

Volunteers interested in helping wrap the gifts are welcome on December 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Fifty Forward Knowles Senior Center located behind the fairgrounds at 174 Raines Avenue.
