4 children saved from roof of burning home

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) – Fire officials in Chattanooga say police officers and a passing motorist saved four children who were spotted on the roof of their burning home.

Fire Department spokesman Bruce Garner said the fire broke out around 5 p.m. Tuesday in a two-story house. The oldest person in the home was a 14-year-old boy, who kicked out a window to get his younger siblings and him onto the roof.

Memorial Hospital surgical technician Matt Evans was driving by and saw the children. He ran to the home as three police officers arrived. The youth passed down the other children to the people below and then was helped down.

The children's father was apparently not home when the fire began. The cause is under investigation.

The 14-year-old cut his leg and was treated at a hospital.
