A Franklin man appeared in court on Tuesday morning for DUI and vehicle assault charges stemming from an incident in July.

According to police, Gregory Powers allegedly tried to run over a 57-year-old bartender at The Pond on July 20 after he was told to leave the facility because he was too impaired.

The bartender sustained minor injuries in the incident and has since undergone knee surgery.

Despite having little to say to the judge during his court appearance, authorities said Powers has their attention.

Powers also faces a vehicular homicide charge for a fatal head-on collision that claimed the life of Virginia resident, Thomas Schlapman last week.

Investigators believe Powers was also intoxicated at the time of last Wednesday's accident that occurred on Franklin Road near South Berry's Chapel Road.

Funeral services for Schlapman, who is the brother-in-law of Little Big Town member Kimberly Schlapman, was held on Tuesday in Virginia.

Powers is scheduled to appear in court on December 18 for his most recent arrest.
