A suspected drunk driver faces several charges after police caught him hiding in a hospital ceiling.
Charles Lawrence was pulled over along Interstate 40 west near Stewarts Ferry Pike late Tuesday night after a police officer clocked him traveling 120 miles-per-hour in a 70 mile-per-hour zone.
The officer said Lawrence smelled of alcohol and appeared jittery.
He later admitted to previously drinking at between two to three margaritas.
Upon a consented search, the officer found light blue pills in his pocket.
In order to continue the search, the officer placed the pills on the vehicle. The officer said that Lawrence attempted to grab the pills off the car several times in order to crush them up.
Shortly after, he was taken to Nashville General Hospital at Meharry for a mandatory blood test.
Police said that once he arrived at the hospital, Lawrence asked to use the bathroom. A short time later, officers heard some noises coming from the ceiling.
After learning from nurses there was no activity on the floors above them, the officers investigated and found that Lawrence had crawled into an air duct in the ceiling.
According to an affidavit, police instructed him to follow them and climb down. He refused and moved to another part of the ceiling before police eventually caught up with him.
Lawrence faces several charges including resisting arrest, escape, tampering with evidence, DUI, and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
He was booked into the Davidson County Jail on a $45,000 bond.
