Country singer Tracy Lawrence continued a Thanksgiving tradition Tuesday by frying around 1,000 turkeys that will be used to help feed homeless people in Nashville and nearby Lebanon.

Lawrence, who is known for his hits “Find Out Who Your Friends Are” and “Paint Me a Birmingham,” first began the annual turkey fry in 2005.

“I think it's wonderful,” he said, adding, “It makes my heart feel blessed that so many people want to donate their time and give back to their fellow man. In such a short time that we're here, it makes me feel good, what little bit I can do.”

He continued, “I came to Nashville with nothing but a dream and I could have wound up in this place very easily, even if it was just going to be for a short amount of time. I had a lot of people who helped me along the way.”

At this year's event, fellow country performer Bucky Covington, and several Titans players including Nate Washington, Jordan Babineaux and Rob Bironas, all rolled up their sleeves to help those less fortunate.

“We've got a lot of food in this country and it would be a shame that Thanksgiving would come around and these guys had nothing,” Covington said.

Director of the Nashville Rescue Mission Lynn Bogle told Nashville's News 2, that Lawrence begins planning for the tradition a year in advance.

“The guys already start talking about it [next year] because they've grown to love Tracy and his compassion for what they're going through every day.”

“Just to see someone like Tracy to have the desire to reach out and let them know he cares that there's hope. It's a big statement,” he said.

Bogle told News 2 that the turkeys being prepared on Tuesday will feed people through the holidays and into February.
