A Franklin mother was killed in an SUV crash in Arkansas while the family was traveling to visit relatives for the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Nevil family left Tennessee to visit family in Texas but never made it.  They were involved in tragic accident Friday night that left Katy Nevil, 38, dead and her 12-year-old daughter fighting for her life.

The crash happened around 9 p.m. Friday along Interstate 30 in Arkansas.

According to Arkansas State Police, another vehicle driving erratically along I-30 West hit the family's SUV causing them to veer off the roadway and hit several trees.

Katy's husband Steve was driving during the incident.  He and the couple's nine-year-old son, Will, were not seriously injured.

Lauren, 12, was last listed in critical condition and put in a medically induced coma at a hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana.

According to Steve's Facebook page, doctors were waiting for swelling in her brain to go down before performing surgery.

Katy and Steve Nevil had been a couple for 17 years.  They'd recently celebrated their anniversary.  Katie was a substitute teacher in Franklin.

“I've always said to my wife, these are two of the closest people I've ever seen,” Mark Moorman, a friend of the couple told Nashville's News 2.  “They were the kind of people you wanted to be like.”

Moorman said the Nevil family moved to Tennessee a little over a year ago and quickly made friends in the neighborhood.

“You instantly felt like you'd known them your entire life,” said Moorman. “They were very welcoming, warm, loving people.”

The other driver involved in the crash was also injured in the crash. The two passengers in his vehicle were not hurt.

Officials are still investigating to determine the cause of the crash.
