Gas prices in Murfreesboro have dropped below $3 a gallon for the first time since December 2010.
A price war at two stations on Medical Center Parkway has dropped the price to $2.87 per gallon.
Thornton's opened earlier this week and set the price as a promotion. About a mile down the highway an Exxon station soon began matching the price.
The drop in prices came as a surprise to many drivers.
“I didn't think we'd get back below. Once it got above $3, even if we could, I didn't think they'd let it drop below three, so yeah, this is good. 2 something is high but below three is great,” motorist Mike Dixon told Nashville's News 2.
According to GasBuddy, the average price of a gallon of gasoline in Nashville has hovered above $3 since December 11, 2011.
In August, Nashvillians were paying an all time high of $3.84 per gallon.
