A Murfreesboro police officer was decommissioned after the department learned he had been indicted by a Rutherford County Grand Jury indictment for a misdemeanor child abuse charge.

Authorities said Officer Anthony Whitehead is accused of physically abusing his nine-year-old daughter.

“Both the child and mother advised that the child had been disciplined by her father, Anthony Whitehead, on September 13, causing excessive bruising on her buttocks and the back of the child's thigh,” Sheriff's Detective Lisa McCallum said.

Whitehouse, 39, was booked into the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on Thursday.

He has since been released on a $1,500 bond.

Whitehead will be placed on administrative duty until an investigation is complete.

He is scheduled to appear in court November 19.

Whitehead has been employed by the Murfreesboro Police Department since 2000.

He was previously suspended without pay by the department in 2008 for excessive force.

No additional information was released.
