NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Potential jurors are being screened in Nashville for the Chattanooga trial of a man charged with killing a police officer.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty if they win the conviction of Jesse Mathews. The defendant is charged with murder in the fatal shooting of Chattanooga Police Sgt. Tim Chapin as the officer attempted to stop him from fleeing an April 2 pawn shop robbery.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported Hamilton County Criminal Court Judge Barry Steelman told the first group of potential jurors on Wednesday morning that jury selection will take place, beginning Jan. 22, 2013.

Steelman told the group the trial will likely take two weeks and the jury will be sequestered.

Potential jurors filled out a 202-page question form.
