A Dickson father was seriously injured after a fight with his children's stepfather ended in gunfire.
The confrontation and shooting occurred shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday at a home in the 100 block of Payne Springs Road off Furnace Hollow Road in Dickson.
According to Detective Don Arnold with the Dickson County Sheriff's Office, Rodger Waynick and his wife, Laura, were picking up her children, ages six and 10, from her ex-husband, Matthew Jones' home.
Det. Arnold said Jones approached their car and confronted Waynick after his children told them their stepfather hits them.
Waynick admitted that he had slapped their heads, prompting Jones to punch him through the drivers side open window.
During the scuffle, Waynick reached for his .45 Caliber gun and fired two shots.
One of the shots went through the windshield and missed Jones. The second hit him in the lower back.
Jones was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville to be treated for his injuries. He was last listed in stable condition.
According to the Dickson Herald, Jones is a teacher and assistant football coach at Creek Wood High School in Charlotte.
His constituents told the paper that he is in “good spirits” following the incident.
Waynick was charged with attempted criminal homicide and was booked into the Dickson County jail on a $125,000 bond. He is expected to appear in court on November 15.
There was no immediate word if Jones faces any charges. The investigation is ongoing.
