LaVergne police have launched an aggressive campaign designed to identify registered sex offenders and make sure they comply with all laws, including staying away from children.

Currently there are 33 registered sex offenders in the Rutherford County city.

By law, these 32 men and one woman are required to notify police when they move.

In an effort to ensure that the offenders are where they say they are, police have initiated operation Treats Not Tricks, or TNT.

Under the plan, officers are checking each sex offender's status to make sure they are complying with the sex offender registry laws.

Over the weekend, officers spotted registered sex offender Yoel Pineda at a Halloween celebration. He was immediately asked to leave the event and was taken into police custody on Monday after detectives determined he lived at an address not listed with authorities.

According to the registered sex offender's registry, Pineda was convicted of raping a 14-year-old girl in California.

Police Chief Mike Walker told Nashville's News 2 a second sex offender was also determined to be living within 1,000 feet of a park, which is also in violation of the law.

The offender was given 48 hours to move.

“We are just holding them accountable,” Walker said. “Our officers have been working very hard for the last couple of weeks to put information together to research data bases.”

Chief Walker added that his officers will be out in fill force checking on sex offenders on Halloween night to make sure all laws are being obeyed.
