Police investigating teen’s jail death

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) – Police are investigating after a 17-year-old boy apparently committed suicide in his jail cell.

The Jackson Sun cited a statement from the Madison County Sheriff's Office in reporting the death on Friday of 17-year-old Zachary I. Ligon, who was found hanging from a bed sheet. The statement says Ligon had been transferred Wednesday from juvenile court to adult court.

Ligon was incarcerated on charges of assault, burglary, unlawful possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment.

He had not been placed on suicide watch, and officials say officers had observed him 15 minutes prior to his death.
